1. Alert everyone
No time should be wasted after the pet is lost and you must alert all your friends, relatives, families in your neighbourhood and provide them a contact number to call and inform if they spot your pet. If you know the exact road where your pet went missing, you must immediately alert every house and shop in that street. The sooner you inform chances are more likely to find the pet as a new animal is any place would be noticed by people living in that place.
2. Create Flyers with photo of your pet
The next most important thing to do is to create flyers with caption “PET DOG/CAT MISSING” along with the most recent picture of your pet. The Flyer must contain 2 to 3 primary contact numbers along with details of the pet such as colour, name, age, gender. It must be in English as well as the local language. You need to include REWARD in big letter to make people understand that it’s really important for you. Make sure you paste these flyers all over the street where the pet went missing and also handout to every house and shop in that street. You may even distribute them to public.
3. Decide a Search Plan
Organized searching helps locate the lost pet. Gather around 10 to 20 people from your family, relatives, friends circle and plan how to go about the search. Get the map of that area from Google maps; take a printout of the same. Allocate two people for each road to call out the pet by its name, to distribute the flyers and to post them in the walls and tall polls. Make sure not even one house or shop is left uninformed. The news spread like fire and anyone who spots the pet will inform immediately. If any news of traces of the animals is got, it must be immediately informed to the rest of the search team. The search must being instantly and no time must be lost in waiting to find the pet. Being calm helps a lot here.
4. Place Pet Lost Ads
Place lost pet ads in Internet (FB, Twitter, and Orkut) and ask everyone to share in their walls. Place ads in newspapers especially local newspaper. The flyer can also be put inside papers by paying the newspaper boys to do so. Make sure you inform your vet about your missing pet and put a flyer in their Bulletin board as well. A lot of animal lovers would then get news about your pet. Most Shops would be willing to let a poster be put in their shops (Pet stores, pet product shops, vets, as well) and as people frequently visit them the news would spread further.
5. Inform local animal Shelters
There are chances that you pet dog may be considered a stray (if found without a collar) and taken to the shelter for sterilization programs. So inform local shelters to let you know in case they rescue any animal that matches the description mentioned in your flyer. Request them to send their volunteers in the area where the pet went missing to aid your search.
6. Don’t Lose hope
Keep searching continuously and don’t give up hope. Keep calm and act swiftly. The faster the search begins the chances are more that you locate your pet. Sometimes lost pets are found even after 2-3 months!
